1st October 2024 - Jim Summers
A Railwayman's guide to the Railways
Biggar Probus Club
started their autumn programme on 1
October 2024 when they heard Jim Summers speak about Scottish Railways, in the
light of his experiences in a life spent in railway management.
Jim gave us an
extensive view of how railways have developed and changed over the last
200 years. Railways are best suited to
moving heavy loads, so most of our railways were built to carry coal and other
minerals, and then evolved to carry passengers as well. Once the main links with
England and between the major towns and cities in Scotland had been established,
rail travel soon became the main means of passenger transport in Scotland.
The rise of motor
traffic for freight and passengers in the 20th century took away much
of the railways’ business, but recent developments have shown that they are
faster and safer than roads, and have much less effect on the environment.
Jim suggested that
railways can still contribute to economic and social development, and several
lines in Scotland have been reopened since 1985, most recently to Levenmouth.
Drawing on examples
from within the UK and the wider world, his wide-ranging illustrated talk gave
us a fascinating view of the potential future of our railways.
The vote of thanks was
given by the Vice President, Jim Watt.
The next meeting is on Tuesday 15 October in Biggar Municipal Hall at 10.00, when we will hear from Jim Moynagh about Beekeeping. All are welcome to attend.
